Marriott to Pay $52 Million and Enhance Data Security Following Breaches

Marriott International has agreed to a $52 million settlement and committed to improving its data security in response to claims stemming from significant data breaches that impacted over 300 million customers globally. The settlements, announced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) alongside attorneys general from 49 states and the District of Columbia, followed investigations into three breaches occurring between 2014 and 2020. These incidents exposed sensitive customer information, including passport details and payment card data, due to inadequate security practices at Marriott and its subsidiary, Starwood Hotels & Resorts. While the company acknowledged no liability in the agreements, it pledged to implement a robust information security program and allow U.S. customers to request the deletion of their personal information.
