UK's CMA Investigates Google-Anthropic Partnership for Competition Concerns
Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has initiated an investigation into Google's investment and partnership with AI startup Anthropic to assess potential competition issues. The CMA is examining whether this collaboration, involving Google's $2 billion investment in Anthropic, could lead to a significant reduction in market competition in the UK. Both Google and Anthropic have pledged to cooperate with the investigation, with Google emphasizing its commitment to a competitive AI ecosystem and Anthropic asserting its operational independence despite the partnership. The CMA's inquiry reflects a broader trend of increased scrutiny of major tech firms' investments in smaller companies to ensure fair competition.
Meta Settles Texas Lawsuit Over Facial Recognition for $1.4 Billion
Meta Platforms has agreed to a $1.4 billion settlement with Texas to resolve allegations that it unlawfully used facial-recognition technology to collect biometric data from millions of Texans without their consent. The lawsuit, initiated in 2022, was the first major case under Texas' biometric privacy law, which allows for significant damages per violation. Meta's settlement, the largest ever by a single state, resolves claims related to its "Tag Suggestions" feature, which reportedly captured biometric information from user photos and videos. While Meta continues to deny any wrongdoing, the settlement reflects the state's dedication to enforcing privacy laws against major tech companies.
