Uber’s Robotaxi Rollout: 20,000 Self-Driving Cars Coming to a City Near You

Uber is hitting the gas on autonomous rides, announcing plans to deploy 20,000 robotaxis over the next six years in partnership with Lucid and Nuro. As part of the deal, Uber is investing $300 million in Lucid, which will supply the EVs, while Nuro provides the “Level 4” self-driving tech capable of navigating real roads and weather without a human driver. The first fleet is set to launch in a major U.S. city next year, with Lucid touting long battery ranges and lower costs as a competitive edge. Lucid stock jumped 30% on the news, while Uber shares inched higher, and testing of the prototype vehicles is already underway in Las Vegas. Both companies are calling the project a scalable, commercially viable blueprint for the future of ride-hailing proving the robots aren’t just coming, they’re already practicing.
Alaska Airlines and Boeing Reach Settlement

After a harrowing midair incident in January 2024, three passengers who filed a $1 billion lawsuit against Alaska Airlines and Boeing have reached a confidential settlement. The lawsuit stemmed from a Boeing 737 MAX 9 flight that was forced to return to Portland shortly after takeoff when a door panel blew out at 16,000 feet. Passengers claimed the crew ignored warnings of unusual noises and alleged the event caused serious emotional and physical harm, including trauma and hearing issues. The case was officially dismissed on July 7, with terms undisclosed. The incident also triggered FAA inspections and temporarily grounded Boeing’s MAX 9 fleet, intensifying pressure on the manufacturer to address safety concerns.
