U.S. Growth Surged in Q3, but Signs of a Slowdown Are Emerging
The latest figures show the U.S. economy delivered a stronger-than-expected performance in the third quarter, powered by active consumer spending and a wave of electric vehicle purchases before incentives expired. However, the strength from earlier in the year is losing steam. Rising living costs are squeezing many households, leaving higher income consumers responsible for most of the spending activity. Economists also note that the lengthy government shutdown is likely to drag down fourth quarter results, with some economic losses unlikely to be recovered. Large companies appear to be navigating higher import costs and continue to invest in areas like artificial intelligence, while smaller businesses are feeling the pressure from tariffs more acutely. Families are also bracing for higher utility bills and upcoming increases in health insurance premiums. Although the Federal Reserve trimmed interest rates slightly, policymakers signaled they need clearer signs of where inflation and the job market are heading before making additional moves.
NBA Eyes Major Expansion With Plans for a New European League
The NBA is taking a serious step toward expanding its global footprint by exploring the launch of a new professional men’s league in Europe alongside FIBA. Beginning in January, the league will start conversations with prospective ownership groups and teams, with early estimates suggesting franchises could reach valuations near one billion dollars. Interest appears strong, with investment banks meeting dozens of potential backers and a formal vote expected as early as March. The NBA sees Europe as a massive growth opportunity, citing hundreds of millions of potential fans and a surge in talent from the region. As part of the initiative, the league plans to support European basketball infrastructure, invest in domestic development programs and potentially place teams in major cities such as Berlin, Paris, Rome and London. Exhibition games and future cross competitions between NBA and European teams are also on the table. Leaders at FIBA have welcomed the move, noting it could strengthen the entire basketball ecosystem across the continent.
