Holiday Hiring Falls to 15-Year Low

Retailers are hiring the fewest seasonal workers in over 15 years, with the National Retail Federation projecting between 265,000 and 365,000 holiday positions, down sharply from 442,000 last year. The slowdown reflects a cooling labor market and cost-conscious strategies as companies navigate inflation, tariffs, and broader uncertainty. Yet, despite fewer jobs, the NRF expects record holiday spending between $1.1 trillion and $1.2 trillion, a sign that while automation and AI investments may be rising, human-driven consumer demand remains strong.

SoftBank Sells Nvidia Stake to Fuel Massive AI Investments

SoftBank has sold its entire $5.83 billion stake in Nvidia as part of a broader strategy to free up capital for new artificial intelligence ventures, including a major investment in OpenAI. The Japanese conglomerate also unloaded part of its T-Mobile holdings for $9.17 billion, describing both moves as part of its “asset monetization” plan to maintain financial flexibility. Analysts say the Nvidia sale isn’t a sign of lost confidence but a funding move for SoftBank’s aggressive AI push, which includes more than $30 billion in planned investments this quarter alone. The company’s Vision Fund reported a $19 billion gain, driven by soaring valuations in the AI sector, underscoring SoftBank’s deepening bet on the future of artificial intelligence.
