United Airlines CEO Sounds the Turbulence Alarm

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby isn’t hitting the panic button yet but he’s definitely keeping it within arm’s reach. The ongoing government shutdown, which kicked off October 1 after Congress failed to pass a funding bill, hasn’t grounded bookings so far. But Kirby warned that as faith in Washington fizzles, so could travelers’ confidence to click “book now.” TSA agents and air traffic controllers are still showing up without paychecks (déjà vu, anyone?), and the FAA has already flagged staffing shortages causing delays in cities like Nashville and Burbank. Delta’s Ed Bastian echoed the same concern, calling the situation a ticking time bomb for air travel. Kirby summed it up best: the longer the stalemate drags on, the higher the risk of an “unforced error” for the U.S. economy and possibly your next vacation.

Netflix Hit by Brazilian Tax Drama, Shares Take a Dive

Netflix’s stock took a 7% hit in after-hours trading after the streamer reported weaker-than-expected third-quarter earnings thanks to a surprise tax bill from Brazil. The company said a 10% tax on payments made by its Brazilian operations to entities abroad wasn’t factored into its forecast and is now likely unavoidable. CFO Spence Neumann stressed the issue isn’t unique to Netflix or streaming and that results would’ve beaten projections without it. Still, the platform’s revenue climbed 17% to $11.51 billion, fueled by new members, higher prices, and a booming ad business, its best ad quarter yet. Looking ahead, Netflix expects similar growth as it preps blockbuster releases like Stranger Things’ final season and Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery. The company is also cashing in on the success of KPop Demon Hunters, turning it into a full-blown franchise with toy partnerships and live experiences set to hit shelves in 2026.
