Thoma Bravo co-founder Orlando Bravo isn’t buying into the AI hype, at least not at today’s price tags. Comparing the current wave of sky-high valuations to the dot-com bubble, Bravo warned that investors are overpaying for companies with modest revenue but billion-dollar price tags. Still, he admits this time feels different: big, established players with healthy balance sheets are bankrolling the boom. With OpenAI valued at half a trillion dollars and Nvidia pledging $100 billion in support, the AI gold rush is being led by heavyweights, not hopeful startups. Bravo’s takeaway? The math still has to make sense because even in the age of AI, cash flow beats catchphrases.

Online Holiday Shopping Set to Rise But the Glow’s a Little Dimmer

U.S. consumers are gearing up to spend an estimated $253.4 billion online this holiday season, up 5.3% from last year, according to Adobe Analytics. The growth is solid but slower than 2023’s 8.7% surge and well below the decade average of 13%, as shoppers hunt for deals amid lingering economic uncertainty. Mobile shopping will dominate, making up more than half of online sales, while AI-powered chatbots are expected to play a much bigger role in helping consumers find gifts, up an eye, popping 520% in usage from last year. Cyber Week will once again steal the show, driving over $43 billion in sales, but overall growth suggests that even holiday cheer can’t outpace inflation and cautious spending.
