Costco to Raise Membership Fees

Costco announced it will increase its membership fees by $5 in the U.S. and Canada effective September 1, raising annual memberships from $60 to $65 and Executive Memberships from $120 to $130. This change affects approximately 52 million memberships, with shares rising 2% in extended trading following the announcement. This marks the first fee increase since June 2017, as Costco typically raises rates every five and a half years. Previously, the company delayed raising fees due to high inflation. Costco depends on membership fees to sustain its revenue and competitive pricing, in contrast to rivals like Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale, which have also adjusted their fees in recent years.

US Stocks Reach New Highs Amid Rate-Cut Hopes and Tech Gains

US stocks surged to new all-time highs on Wednesday, driven by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's encouraging remarks about potential rate cuts and strong performances from Big Tech stocks. The S&P 500 climbed 1%, reaching over 5,600 for the first time, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.1%, and the Nasdaq Composite increased by 1.2%. Tech giants like Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, and Google saw notable gains, contributing to the overall market boost. Powell's testimony suggested a potential shift in monetary policy due to cooling inflation and a slowing job market, raising investor optimism. However, the upcoming consumer inflation report remains a key factor in determining future economic and policy directions.
